VILJANDIMAA – TO AN ANCIENT BEAT

The heart of the Viljandi county beats in an ancient rhythm. The rhythm is slightly mysterious and it carries you away with itself. This rhythm contains the past, the present and the future, creation and preservation. It represents centuries of live in this area, its strong cultural history and old traditions.

Every place has its story and Viljandi county has particulary many stories to tell. Viljandi is an ancient city situated on a hill by a beautiful lake. Green parks, old wooden houses, monuments and small art galleryies allow  for pleasant walks in the town.

Sothern Viljandimaa, named Mulgimaa, is the land of wealthy and proud people known as Mulks. Mulgimaa is famous for its beautiful nature – hills, valleys, forests and lakes but also with its national food. Old Heathen Lasna was the protagonist in Karksi legends and the tricks he played on people have left many traces in the area.

The rhythm of life in an interesting part of Viljandi county, called Soomaa (Marshland) is not affected by the usual four seasons, but as many as five. The fifth season is that of spring floods, when water can rise up to six meters above the lowest level of summer.

Lake Võrtsjärv is the largest internal body of water in Estonia is famous as the biggest natural eel breeding place in Europe.

The northern part of Viljandi county invites with old manor culture and small wooden horses in Olustvere. Heimtali near Viljandi introduces beautiful Estonian handicraft.
